Let's illustrate it with a simple story / example:
Let's say you visit a different country this week, and you are looking for a restaurant in the city you're in. While walking on the street, you find a 15 years old guy, and you ask him ”What is the best restaurant in town?”. And he says “This one”
After walking a few more steps, you see a family, and ask the same question: “What is the best restaurant in town?”. And they say ”This one”
Few steps further and, let's assume for the purpose of this example that you meet the Mayer of the Town, and after a short and warm small talk, you ask him the same question: “What is the best restaurant in town?”. And he pick a different restaurant and says “This one”.
Whom are you going to trust more?
Who will have the biggest credibility in your eyes?
You would think that the Mayer knows the town best and, of course, you would trust him most (at least more than the young boy for sure 🙂 )
So how Google Thins when it comes to SEO?
The same way with how google thinks regarding search results on the page. If your website has more authoritative websites linking back to you, saying that you are a good Solar Panel Company, you get higher on Google search results page. If you have websites from, let's say, food industry (that are not related at all with solar business) this will not count as a authoritative website, even if in food industry they have are one of the most trusted website.
Just as the boy on the street doesn't give you much trust when it comes to picking the best restaurant in town.
So now you know what to do: Look for trust worthy website in your industry to get them mentioned on their website. You can begin with your partners, your social media (i know it sounds obvious but often social profiles do not point to company's website), and then look for other website with greater authority in your industry.
